A weekend of AI agents cracked a 180-year math problem. Then the fight started.

10,000 AI agents cracked a $1 million math problem
I opened X yesterday to a fight, not a celebration.
OpenAI said it did something no one has done. It says 10,000 AI agents cracked a $1 million math prize in 88 hours. The problem is Navier-Stokes. It is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems, a list of the hardest open questions in mathematics drawn up by the Clay Mathematics Institute. It concerns the equations describing how fluids such as air and water move, which are used in aircraft design, weather forecasting and the study of blood flow.
The agents are just copies of one model, run in parallel. By the company's account the work took 88 hours and roughly 10,000 coordinating AI agents, copies of its models running the proof in parallel, with the output checked in Lean, software that verifies each step formally.
Then came the ugly part. A rival mathematician said he got there first.

Yesterday was not a product day. It was a power day.
A math breakthrough turned into a knife fight over credit. Feds named six Chinese labs for copying US models. Google bought a nuclear plant's output. Amazon bought its way onto Qualcomm's cap table. The models grab the headlines. The fights are all about who controls what sits underneath them.

🔬 A mathematician says OpenAI raced to erase his name
Hours before OpenAI's post, a four-page statement dropped. Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematician at NYU, released a four page statement giving a different account.
He and an Anthropic researcher had been closing in for months. Then, he says, OpenAI made him an offer. The other was to write a solo paper that credited the use of an OpenAI LLM in the Navier-Stokes solution without the inclusion of Alpöge's name. Buckmaster said he declined both proposals. He says when he threatened to go public, he was asked, "Why would you ruin your career?"
Why this matters: he had put his drafts into OpenAI's own coding tool. "I asked whether the model had been trained on, or had access to, our sessions in Codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole of this project. I was told the model did not look up user data. I asked again, about training, and I did not get an answer," the statement reads. If you can't trust a lab with your unpublished work, you stop using its tools.
🕵️ Three US agencies name six Chinese AI labs
The NSA, CISA and FBI put out a rare joint advisory. The agencies are accusing DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun and Z.AI of extracting "billions of tokens across millions of exchanges/requests" from American models, including Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's GPT, Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok, since 2024.
The method is called distillation. Distillation is the term for a method in AI development in which the output of a powerful model is used to train newer ones. A strong model teaches a weaker one, cheaply.
Why this matters: the advisory doesn't just warn. It tells US labs how to fight back, quietly. The advisory recommends that American AI companies quietly degrade responses for accounts identified with high confidence as conducting malicious distillation, rather than simply blocking them outright. Feed bad actors bad answers. That's a strange new kind of cold war.
⚛️ Google buys a nuclear plant to feed Finland's data centers
Google is spending big on cold Nordic ground. Google announced plans on Wednesday to pour at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) into AI infrastructure in Finland, a figure the company described as the single largest European investment in its history.
The part that matters is the power. Google signed a 22-year life extension power purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum for the Loviisa nuclear power plant, which currently supplies roughly 10% of Finland's electricity.
Why this matters: this plant was going to close. Without the agreement, the plant would not have been able to continue operations beyond 2030, the company said. A tech company just kept a country's nuclear plant alive because it needs the electrons. That's the AI boom in one line. It runs on power, not code.
🧠 Meta ships Muse, an agent inside your inbox
Meta launched its biggest consumer AI bet yet. Available initially in the US on iOS, Android, the web, and WhatsApp, Muse can handle tasks such as sending emails, booking travel, filling out forms, lowering bills, and making purchases.
This is not a chatbot. It acts. For sensitive actions, such as sending an email or making a purchase, Muse pauses and asks the user for approval.
Why this matters: to use it, you hand Meta the keys. Muse's biggest advantage may also be its biggest weakness. Meta is asking people to hand an AI access to email, calendars, payments and other personal services. That makes privacy and reliability far more important than they are with a chatbot that simply generates text. The whole bet rides on trust, and this is Meta. That's a tall ask.
🤖 A humanoid robot walked off a factory line in China
XPeng did something Tesla keeps promising. XPeng has switched on what it calls the world's first automated production line for advanced humanoid robots, and its IRON robot walked off that line under its own power. The line runs mostly on its own. The Chinese automaker says the line runs with more than 80% of its core processes automated.
Why this matters: the contrast with Tesla is brutal. Musk once predicted Tesla would build roughly 10,000 Optimus robots in 2026. In January, he admitted none of them were doing useful work yet.
One robot walking off a line is not mass production. Tesla is still converting a car line. XPeng just turned one on. The lead in physical AI may not stay in California.
The Numbers
130 billion tokens — OpenAI's math run
Tokens are the chunks of text a model reads and writes. The AI agents exchanged close to three million messages and generated 130 billion output tokens over roughly 88 hours.
Up to $4 billion — Amazon's stake in Qualcomm
Amazon received stock options for up to 25 million Qualcomm shares at an exercise price of $161.26 per share. The chip deal could reach $60 billion in orders.
37,000 — Google's Finland jobs
During construction, the investment is expected to contribute an average of €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP and support more than 37,000 jobs.
The Main Event
The models are easy now. The plumbing is the war.
Look at yesterday as one picture, not five stories.
OpenAI's model may have cracked a 180-year problem in a weekend. That's stunning. But the fight wasn't about the math. The underlying mathematics has drawn real praise. Terence Tao, a Fields medalist, described Buckmaster and Alpöge's work as a remarkable achievement, and that assessment is separate from the dispute over credit.
The fight was about who owns the breakthrough. And whether a lab used your private drafts to get there.
That same question is everywhere yesterday. The Feds accused China of copying US models. Distillation is just learning from someone else's output. The agencies said DeepSeek's publicly cited training cost of $5.6 million is misleading because it excludes the cost of data acquired through distillation. A model is only as valuable as your ability to stop others from copying it.
Here's the twist. OpenAI once led the fight against distillation. Now its CEO shrugs. "I would rather people not distill from us, for sure. But this is not in my top ten list of worries," he said in a July interview.
Why the shrug? Because the model is no longer the moat. The moat is underneath.
The moat is Google buying a nuclear plant's output for 22 years. It's Amazon buying its way onto Qualcomm's cap table for cheaper inference chips, what it costs to run a model once it's trained. It's XPeng turning on a robot line while Tesla is still cutting metal.
The smartest model is becoming a commodity. Whoever controls the power, the chips, and the factories wins. The math proof was the fireworks. The land grab was the actual news.
The Subtext Report
A weekend, a proof, a lawsuit-in-waiting
OpenAI says it won't take the $1 million. Big of them. According to the prize rules, a solution has to be published in a peer-reviewed journal and survive two years after gaining acceptance in the mathematical community before the institute will even convene a committee to consider the work. So the check wasn't coming for years anyway. Easy money to turn down when it doesn't exist yet.
The robot walked. The bar is low.
XPeng's big flex is that a robot walked without falling over. One skeptic put it plainly. It's also not much of a feat to have a humanoid robot walking once the basic operating system is installed. Still beats a Tesla robot that, per Musk himself, isn't doing anything useful. Walking is a start.
